How to use the MKM Ultimate Throwing Stick™
When using the MKM Throwing Tools™, there are only two things that need to be kept in mind.
1) The rib needs to be tightly screwed to the handle on the throwing tools (You don't want the ribs on the throwing tools to rotate or shift position when they are being used) and,
2) when using the throwing tools, be sure the rib is positioned at a trailing angle to the clay wall, rather than at right angles or at a leading angle -- much as you would use a rib on the outside of a clay wall. You want the rib to smoothly trail over the clay wall. This reduces any possibility of the rib chattering against the clay.
You may rotate the ribs to position them at any angle that works for you, just make sure to re-tighten the rib screw.
Should you wish to replace the rib with another rib – either a different MKM rib, or one that you have made - simply unscrew the rib from the handle and put the new rib on. Should different size washers be needed, they are available from your local hardware store.
The rib can be attached to either side of the handle, depending on the direction of rotation of your pottery wheel.
Other Information MKM Ultimate Throwing Sticks come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The T2 is tall and thin and works great for tall cylinder objects. The T3C and T3D are large and have a curve, which makes them suitable for jars and bellied out forms. The sharp edge of the ribs removes torque on the clay when throwing allowing the wall of a bottle to move smoothly outward. The ribs can be removed from the throwing sticks and then rotated as necessary or replaced with other ribs. When using the MKM Throwing Sticks always remember to firmly tighten the rib to the handle so the rib doesn’t rotate when using. This is important! If the rib still rotates, then remove the inner washer, and tighten again.
